Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per fess. Above in a golden (= yellow) field is a demi-lion issuant, armed and tongued red. Below in a red field is a golden (= yellow) 5-point star.
Meaning:
According to source the demi-lion is symbolizing the /dukes of Jlich/, the former rulers, while the star is symboloizing /St.Mary/. Both elements are known from lay judge seals since the 13th century. The current arms are based upon a seal from 1632. The star formerly sometimes had six points. According to the city's webpage however the star was symbolizing the local jurisdiction in the middle ages.
