Schauenstein Coat of Arms
Shield parted per pale; at dexter Argent, standing on base Vert a negro proper with apron Gules, holding a stone Gules by his right hand; at sinister quartered of Argent and Sable.
Meaning:
The arms were not described, when they had been granted in 1422. They can however be found on local seals after the middle of the 16th century, which had an additional inscription "1422" . The city was ruled by the Zollern kin since 1386/1388, symbolised by the quartered shield of the kin at sinister. The black man is considered by his clothing to be in fact a miner, who shows a chunk of ore. The dexter half is thus considered to be punning, as the name of the city is derived from "show a stone". A coloured painting from 1581 displayed the same pattern. The man was misinterpreted as a negro since 1692.
