Coat of Arms
Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per chape into blue and red with a silver (=white) fimbriation. In the red lower field is a silver (=white) anvil topped by crossed hammer and calliper of the same colour.
Meaning:
According to source the municipality was separated from the city of Velbert in 1897 and gained city rights in 1947. The tools are symbolizing the numerous iron foundries in the area. And the fimbriation is not a chevron but symbolizing a typical roof of one of the small home forges, that had been in the area in pre-industrial times.

The coat of arms was approved by minister of interior of Northrhine Westphalia on 20 March 1947. According to Stadler the flag was approved in 1937, probably by Oberpräsident of Prussian Rhineprovince and without coat of arms.
