Coat of Arms
Shield Gules, a castle Argent with an embattled tower at sinister, roof and dome of the tower Azure.
Meaning:
The settlement was built bei Gotfrid of Arnsberg, Bishop of Osnabrück (1321 - 1349). It gained city rights around 1360, when the oldest seal was made, already displaying the castle. Prints of the seal existed since 1532. The image from the seal was transferred without any changes to the arms, which were approved in 1949 by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony. Roof and dome first had been Argent, as red and white had been the colours of the Bishopric of Osnabrück. The tinctures of the roofs were changed to Blue after 1970. Around the chimney there exists a story about the capture of _Count Johann of Hoy_a.
