Introduction
Horizontal bicolor black-yellow. Officially adopted 28 April 1884. Used as flag of Saxony-Anhalt State 1946-1952
Norman Martin, March 1998
The Provinz Sachsen is not to be mixed up with the Königreich Sachsen, later the Freistaat Sachsen. Provincial flags for the Provinces of Prussia were prescribed from 1882 onwards... On 5th March 1884, the parliament adopted the black-yellow flag, confirmed by the Prussian King (i.e. the Emperor William II) 28th April 1884. This flag lasted until 1935 and was also used after 1945.

This had been the flag of the Electorate, later Kingdom of Saxony until 1815, when it was replaced by the white-green one.

Provincial flags for the Provinces of Prussia were prescribed from 1882 onwards. For the Provinz Sachsen a first proposal was derived from the arms: green-yellow-black. This was not adopted by the provincial parliament, though.

Flag adopted 1882, abolished 1884
On 16 March 1882, the parliament adopted a flag of black-white-green, a compromise between the Prussian colours and the Colours of Saxony. However, this flag was not confirmed by the Prussian King.
