Description of current flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a black over white horizontal bicolour. The rectangular flaghead is white. Its width is 1/3 of total width. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flaghead topped by an inscription in black capitals "STADT WERL".

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The silver(=white) shield is divided by a black cross. The vertical cross bar is superimposed by a silver(=white) key.
Meaning:
According to source both are reprensenting the former sovereignty of the archbishops of Köln. The key also is a symbol of St.Peter. The key originally had been golden but was the colour was changed in 1910.

The coat of arms was granted on 28 January 1911, the flag is mentioned in appendix to �3(2) of Hauptsatzung of the city of Werl, dated 17 December 1999.
