Aschersleben City
Aschersleben was seat of the Aschersleben-Staßfurt County. The name of the town is related to the Ascharia castle from which the Ascanians got their name (see also the discussion about Saxony-Lauenburg). Source: Günther 1996a.

Bicolour
[](../images/d/de-sz-al2.gif)3:5 image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 25 Oct 2019
It was a white over black plain horizontal bicolour. This flag existed before 1900, but it couldn't satisfy the local council, because it could be easily mismatched with the flag of Prussia. It was thus abolished in 1900.

Coat of Arms
Shield Gules, a castle Argent, having two towers with cone roofs; the open port is charged with an inescutcheon in bend chequered of 12 of sable and Argent, in the background an eradicated oak Vert, acorned Argent with three blackbirds (blazon just says: "black birds") Sable in its branches.
Meaning:
The arms appeared already on the oldest known seal from the early 14th century, except the chequered inescutcheon. Aschersleben was founded as a city by the Counts of Ballenstedt and became a possession of the Bishops of Halberstadt in 1429. The inescutcheon is the coat of arms of the Counts of Aschersleben.
