Ehingen Coat of Arms

The shield is five times divided per bend into silver (= white) and red.
Meaning:
Ehingen upon Danube had been capital and mint of the Counts of Berg, Burgau and Schelklingen. Prints of seals showing the pattern of the current arms existed since 1304. Ehingen became part of Vorderösterreich (Hither Austria) from 1343 to 1805 and part of Württemberg since 1806. The arms didn't change. Stadler displays however three red bends in a silver shield. According to him this pattern was rarely used since the 18th century.

The coat of arms was approved by Regierungspräsidium Tübingen on 19 February 1979, published in GABl 256/1980. The existence of a white-red "flag" is confirmed by

  1. Stadler 1971
  2. Deutsches Städtebuch, vol. IV,2,2: Württemberg, 1962
  3. Heinz Bardua: "Kreis- und Gemeindewappen in Baden-Württemberg. Band 4: Die Kreis- und Gemeindewappen im Regierungsbezirk Tübingen"
