Shiel parted per fess, above Azure a lion passant Or armed and tongued Gules, beneath Or five grain ears Vert in fan.
Meaning:
The lion is taken from the arms of the Welfen kin, who ruled the area since the middle of the 13th century. The lion was also used by the Dukes of Braunschweig, who ruled the area from 1432-1807. The grain symbolises the agricultural character of the district.

The flag was approved on 8 October 1965. The arms were approved on 8 October 1954 by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony.
