Wilkau-Haßlau Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess; above Azure a wolf passant Argent; beneath parted per pale, at dexter Argent a cogwheel Sable, at sinister Argent hammer and mallet Sable.
Meaning:
Wildau and Haßlau had been small villages. Due to black coal mining both had an economic boost since the middle of the 19th century. The villages were united on 1 May 1934 and gained city rights the same day. The wolf is canting, referring to the Sorbian word "wilk". Thus Wilkau means "location of the wolf". The cogwheel is representing local industries, mainly textiles factories, papermills and wood processing. Hammer and mallet are representing mining.
