About the Ministry

The "Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Comunicaciones" (English: "Ministry of Public Works and Communications") dates back to the year 1854 when the "Secretaría de Estado de Guerra, Marina y Obras Públicas" (English: "Secretary of State for War, Navy and Public Works") was created, but at the end of that same year this ministry was abolished as a result of a constitutional reform. It resurfaced in 1887 when the "Ministerio de Fomento y Obras Públicas" (English: "Ministry of Development and Public Works") was created.

In Law 786 of State Secretariats of the year 1934, the "Secretarías de Estado" (English: "Secretary of State for Communications and Public Works") is formed.

In the year 1959 it was called "Secretaría de Estado de Obras Públicas y Comunicaciones" (English: "Secretary of State for Public Works and Communications").

On 8 February 2010, complying with the mandate of the new Constitution, the Executive Branch issued Decree 56-10 that establishes the change of name from State Secretariats to Ministries, thus changing the "Secretaria de Estado de Obras Públicas y Comunicaciones, SEOPC" (English: "State Secretary") to its current denomination.
