The municipality of Sallaumines (9,654 inhabitants in 2018; 382 ha) is located east of Lens.
Sallaumines remained a small agricultural village until the discovery of coal, which led to sudden industrialization and population growth. The mining disaster of Courri&egrzave;res, which claimed 1,099 lives on 10 March 1906 occured in Billy-Montigny, Méricourt and Sallaumines.
