Coat of Arms:
Shield Or, a cross patonce Gules between four Cornish choughs proper, i.e. Sable armed Gules.
The college has a claim to be "the oldest academical society for the education of undergraduates in any university" and is the last surviving medieval hall at the University of Oxford. The college was founded in 1236, some say in 1226, by St. Edward of Abingdon, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1233 to 1240, born as Edmund Rich around 1174. The college arms are attributed to its founder. The birds are variously referred to as sea-pies, oyster-catchers and Cornish choughs.
