The island of Marie-Galante is part of Guadeloupe. It has a land area of 158.1 km² and 10,650 inhabitants. The island is commonly known as la grande galette (‘the Big Biscuit’) due to its round shape and almost flat surface. Formerly having over 106 sugar mills, it is also called "the Island of a Hundred Windmills".
It is made of three communes: Grand-Bourg (4,940 inhabitants), Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante (3,290), and Saint-Louis (2,420). These three communes formed an intercommunal entity in 1994: the Community of Communes of Marie-Galante (French: communauté de communes de Marie-Galante), the oldest intercommunal structure of the overseas departments of France.
The intermunicipal structure has a white flag with logo: photo, photo.
