Presentation of Ventouris

The Ventouris family have been involved in shipping from around 1960, largely with ferries with five brothers given as being involved in the 1980s. They operated through a variety of companies, some individual and others in association, with part of the family empire going under in the mid 1990s. Vessel ownership has been divorced from the companies which have been managers/agents and there has been some transfer of ships between the companies as circumstances require.

According to Brown's Flags and Funnels of Shipping Companies of the World (1995) [lgr95], the house flag of A.K. Ventouris is white with the stylized letters "AKV" and two waves, all in blue.

Apostolis K. Ventouris began as A.K. Ventouris Shipping Co. in 1993 later being shown as A.K. Ventouris Inc. Although the family is based in Piraeus this company differs in being shown by Lloyds as being out of Athens. Judging by photos of the ship liveries, the version with the "AKV" logo was used initially but this livery then changes to a another design involving a red "V" surmounting a blue circle with 2 white horizontal lines in its lower half. This may have formed the basis of a new flag or they might not have bothered. Their ferry business apparently lapsed in 1996 but in 2002 they gained the contract for the Cycladic inter-island route. This is apparently operated through a new company, C-Link Ferries M.C. of Piraeus. There is no mention of Ventouris but the ships wear his "V" logo indicating ultimate ownership but no flags being evident.

Ventouris Group Enterprises S.A. is controlled by George Ventouris and is still operating using the trade name Ventouris Ferries. The use of the "B" being the Greek "V" has been common amongst the various family company livery markings apart from A.K.

According to Brown's Flags and Funnels of Shipping Companies of the World (1995) [lgr95] and a colour photo shown on the Ellade Viaggi website, the house flag of Ventouris Ferries / Group Enterprises is white with a thin blue cross and in the center a blue "B" encircled in a blue ring.

According to Brown's Flags and Funnels of Shipping Companies of the World (1995) [lgr95], the house flag of Ventouris Sea Lines is white with a blue border and in the center a blue "B" inscribed in a white shield outlined in blue and surmounted by the letters "V.S.L."

Ventouris Sea Lines is supposed to have become bankrupt in 1996 when it formed part of a group of companies under Mastrogiorgis Shipping Co. Ltd. which had changed its name in 1991 from Constantinos & Charalambos Ventouris Co. Ltd. As the bankrupt company did not own the vessels they merely shifted operators and the Agios Georgios has been photographed in June of this year still with the old funnel though now operated by Mastrogiorgis. However the flag would appear to be now part of history.
