Presentation of Zlatar
The Town of Zlatar (not to be confused with the neighbouring municipality of Zlatar-Bistrica) is located about 30 km north of Zagreb and 15 km southeast of Krapina. It has some 7,500 inhabitants, less the 3,000 in the town itself.

Flag of Zlatar
The symbols of Zlatar are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Zlatara, adopted on 31 March 1995 by the Town Assembly and published on 5 April 1995 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Županije Krapinsko-zagorske, No. 3.
The flag (photo; video) is prescribed as follows.
The size of the flag determines the ratio of the flag length to its width being 2:1. The flag of the Town of Zlatar is produced of silk with golden-white stripes. The golden stripes symbolize the gold bars and link them with the name of the Town [zlato means "gold" in Croatian]. The bottom edge of the flag is not linearly trimmed. The golden (yellow) stripes are 1/10 height of the flag longer than the white stripes. The gold and white stripes are ornamented with a golden (yellow) fringe. The coat of arms of the Town starts at the second quarter (1/4 or .25 of the height). The left and the right from the coat of arms is left empty 0.3 of the flag width. The coat of arms is 0.4 of the flag width wide. The proportions of the coat of arms are described in the size of the coat of arms [sic!] (1.25:1). The coat of arms in the flag differs in some details from the self-standing coat of arms. The shield of the coat of arms is edged with a thin golden edge (old gold colour). The red and white fields are in the flag black and white. The background of the church and the sky is coloured from gray (in th bottom) to black (in the top). Beneath the coat of arms, on a golden arched ribbon, on both sides, is inscribed in black letters "Grad Zlatar".

The coat of arms is prescribed as follows.
... is a semicircular shield (ratio of height to width, 1.25:1) bordered with a wide golden border (old gold colour) and the thinner edge at the top (of the same colour). In the base of the border is arched inscription of capital black letters "GRAD ZLATAR". The outer edge of the shield is edged with a thin blackline.
Inescutscheon: In the shield is inset a smaller shield in which the central part shows the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zlatar (coloured yellow-ochre). The tower of the church dominates the central part of the shield (the top is green). The red and white fields raising in perspective from the base symbolize the historical Croatian coat of arms and the endurance and connection between the Croatian state and the Catholic church since the time of King Zvonimir to the present days. The opened church doors symbolize the openness and thousand years of unity of the church and the Croatian people. To the left and the right of the tower, the main nave of the church is demarked, and behind it the auxilliary naves. Above the church tower is a crown wiith three crosses (the Croatian royal crown) ornamented with red precious stones; it symbolizes the unbreakable continuity and confirmation of the phrase "the remains of the remains of once great and glorious Kingdom of Croatia" (reliquiarum olim magni et inclyti regni Croatiae)* and the fidelity and persistence of the people of the region to the idea of creating their own state. In the background of the smaller shield is the Ivančica mountain (dark green) on which can be discerned the ruins of Oštrc (on the left) and Belec-grad (on the right), being closely connected with the history and development of the Town of Zlatar. The background of the church and the part of the shield above the Ivančica mountain are coloured blue.
*the political and afterwards poetic name for those parts of Croatia that were left unoccupied by the Ottomans by the end of the 16th century, that is, Croatia at its smallest, consisting of a strip from the coast towards Hungary, more or less what is covered today by Rijeka, Karlovac, Zagreb and Varaždin counties. The Latin phrase cited in the text should have been given in full, reliquiae reliquiarum olim inclyti regni Croatiae.
