As a total, there are 3155 localities (Hungarian: település, plural: települések), which are 348 towns (Hungarian: város, plural: városok;) and 2807 villages (Hungarian: község, plural: községek). There are 25 of the towns are so-called urban counties (Hungarian: megyei jogú város - town with county rights), and they do not belong to any counties. All county seats (except Budapest) are urban counties. There are 127 large villages or municipalities (Hungarian: nagyközség, prural nagyközségek) of 2807 villages. By administrative means, today there are no significant differences between villages and municipalities, this category comes from historical traditions.
