Overview

The above organisation is active in Belgium, showing itself a militant group defending immigrants, particularly Islamic ones. Having come to the fore in April 2002, it has logically become the natural antagonist of the Vlaams Blok. But then the AEL has been frowned upon by all major political parties and (verbally) attacked by the Prime Minister. It will participate in the forthcoming federal elections (May) in alliance with a small communist party. The AEL is also busy extending its action radius to neighbouring countries such as the Netherlands.
Have a look at their website: http://www.arabeuropean.org/index.html and look for the pictures announced in the left column. The AEL uses a striking flag in the pan-Arabic colours. (More information needed here. For instance, is Europe explicitly represented by one of the two crescents?)
Jan Mertens, 23 February 2003

The AEL has entered into an electoral alliance with the Partij van de Arbeid (Labour Party) which has nothing to do with their Dutch namesake.
The Dutch PvdA is social democrat whereas the Flemish PvdA is left- wing communist, they used to be maoists I believe. The name then was Alle Macht Aan De Arbeiders, AMADA in short (All Power To The Workers).
The AEL-PvdA alliance has received the name Resist. No info on emblems or the like.

Flag Description

See http://www.arabeuropean.org/News/actfoto091201.html - not a bad design IMO. The AEL has announced to become active in the Netherlands, but there was no flag of them in the demonstration one week ago AFAIK.
Jarig Bakker, 23 February 2003

The large flag at the front of the photo has red at the hoist, while the smaller flags carried by other demonstrators have black. Has there been an "official" design agreed upon?
Albert Kirsch, 23 February 2003

Indeed, the flag is a great flag, vexilologically speaking. In the photos, you'll find two versions of that flag (one of which as a small plastic flag, so it might not be more than an error, or something quite marginal), plus the following flags:
- Palestine
- Hezbollah (yellow variant)
- Iraq
- a green flag with white shahada (no swords in sight...)
- a red flag with yellow hammer and sickle and some writing
- a seemingly plain black flag
- Morocco
- Palestine with lots of writing
Jorge Candeias, 23 February 2003

The AEL logo on the website has the red crescent at the left ("Western" left that is).
Jan Mertens, 24 February 2003

The flag of the Arab European League is shown on its website athttp://www.arabeuropean.org/ and (in the cloth) in the photos from a rally that are linked from there.
Richard Mallett, 22 March 2007

The AEL has its headquarters inBelgium.
Jan Mertens, 26 March 2007

The AEL seems to be concerned with Belgium only. AEL is a political party and not an umbrella organization like the Arab League (although the choice of a similar name is probably not a coincidence).
