The emblem is a combination of the hiragana higashi ひがし - I guess the hi is the shape as a whole, the ga the right half of the outer part, and the shi the inner ring. (Two towns/villages joining in peace?) - the circle. The emblem shows unity and both wings spreading together for future growth. The whole emblem has the form of the shape of Izu and a fish. The circle depicts a citrus fruit and the three fine lines and the small circle depict the hot springs with sightseeing area.
Jonathan Dixon, 1 February 2006
The town emblem and the flag were adopted on Aug 1st 1969 by Notice No 16. The blue flag has a white town emblem in the center. The town emblem is a stylized hiragana ひがし Higashi. The ring connects the former two villages with a solidarity and the spread wings symbolizes the towns development. The circle stands for citrus production and three thin lines with small circle for a hot spring. As a whole, it represents the landscape of Higashi Izu and fishes. The flag proportion is 2:3.
