In 1541, he succeeded to the governorship upon the death of his father and became the lord of Odawara Castle in Sagami Province. He expanded its territory throughout the Kanto region. He was an outstanding military commander who fought against Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Imagawa Yoshimoto, and others, winning many battles. The war banner has white background with Hojyo’s family emblem of the three serpent scales in black in the shape of three triangles gathered. Another war banner was horizontal five color stripes of yellow-blue-red-white-black from the top. Each color indicates the location of an important castle in the territory.
