The coat of arms of Isla Mujeres was designed by the painter Elio Carmichael in 1980 or 1981 as he worked on a mural of the state; he is also known for creating the coat of arms of the state. Over an outlined square with blue or white, there is a blue circle. Over this, a compass rose and a lighthouse is placed; above the lighthouse is a red indicator reading "N" for north. The circle signifies the sea, the compass rose the marine orientation of the municipality; while the circle and lighthouse signify security and progress, as well as its location in the north of the state.
