Meerssen is a municipality in Limburg province, until some years ago with some fame as the finish of the Amstel Gold cycling race. The present municipality was formed 1 Jan 1982 by the merger of the former municipalities of Bunde, Geulle, Meerssen and Ulestraten.
Flagdescription: A hoist of two stripes of blue and yellow, with on blue a yellow fleur-de-lis, and on yellow a double-headed eagle; the fly of two stripes yellow and blue.
The designer forgot to attach an image to the description, so on its own initiative the municipality had this made.
This gruelling incident probably results from the "banenvlag" (striped flag) tradition in the Nertherlands, wherein it is self-evident that stripes are horizontal. Usually the width of the stripe is indicated by its "height". In the case of a vertical stripe its width is indicated by its "length". And alas, Meerssen is far away from Den Haag and Muiderberg, and its civil servants had no clue about "banistiek" as vexillology was called in those days.
It is suggested to describe the flag:
quartered at 1/3 flagheight of blue and yellow; at the hoist on blue a yellow fleur-de lis, and on yellow a double-headed eagle armed red.
