Amersfoort municipality
Amersfoort is the second city in Utrecht province, and the 17th city in the Netherlands (ranked by inhabitants) - 126.000 in Amersfoort. The flag of Amersfoort was adopted by municipal resolution of 28 Apr 1959. The design was by the architect D. Zuiderhoek. The colors and the cross are derived from the municipal Coat of Arms.

The municipality of Amersfoort consists of the city of Amersfoort and the settlements/suburbs Hoogland, Hooglanderveen, De Bik, Coelhorst, Zeldert, De Brand, Duist, De Haar, Emiclaer, Nieuwland, Zevenhuizen, Calveen, Vathorst and Zielhorst. All settlements, apart from Amersfoort city, were on the territory of the former municipality of Hoogland, which merged with Amersfoort in 1974. Parts of other municipalities have been annexed in 1997 (Palestine, Hoevelaken, from Nijkerk, Stoutenburg from Leusden).
