Schoonhoven municipality
Population (1 Jan 2003): 12.254; area: 6,96 km². Settlements: Schoonhoven (seat).
On 16 Jul 1962 the present flag was adopted by municipal resolution. Description: white with four lions of black and red.
Already in 1425 a flag like this may have been won from the Rotterdammers during a siege (albeit with a yellow field). It was hoisted in the Grote Kerk, but was lost in a fire in 1518. On a historical painting of 1577 the flag reappeared as the Schoonhoven flag.
