Description of the flag
Adopted on 11 December 1987.
The flag of Akershus represents the silhouette of Akershus castle, built under king Hakon V (the same king who was in charge of building Vardøhus - the castle represented on the flag of Finnmark). Proportions are 1:1
Jan Oskar Engene, 17 November 1995
Akershus, Buskerud and stfold and three other municipalities were merged into Viken on 1 January 2020.
Valentin Poposki, 16 January 2020
The merger was opposed in all three counties which were to merge both before and after the implementation - even the local government has made the reversal its main goal.
As a result, it was decided by the national parliament in 2022 that the merger be reversed. On 2024-01-01, Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold counties were re-established and their original arms were readopted; since their flags had actually been banners of arms, they were automatically readopted as well.
