The design depicts roof tiles or slates. Fromhttp://www.ngw.nl/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=%C3%98ystre%20Slidre This recognizes that the slate industry was a formerly important industry in the area. Slate roofing was very common in the village of Valdres.
