Fitjar, Vestland (original) (raw)
The municipality of Fitjar (3,189 inhabitants in 2017; 14,243 ha) forms the northern part of Stord island.
The arms of Fitjar, designed in the 1940s, features the golden helmet allegedly wore by King Haakon the Good during the battle of Fitjar, which opposed him in 961 to the sons of his half-brother Eric Bloodaxe. Haakon died from his wounds; his death and reception in Valhalla are described in the skaldic poem "Hkonarml", composed by the skald Eyvindr skldaspillir.
