Coat of Arms

The blazon is: På rød bunn en gull knestående bueskytter. In English that would yield: Gules a bowman genuant or. ("Genuant" is, I understand rather pedantic, while the simple English "kneeling" might also be used).
The coat of arms was approved by the royal resolution of 8 November 1979, drawn by Hallvard Trætteberg.
The coat of arms represents the local hero, one Einar Tambarskjelve, who fought for Olav Trigvason in the Battle of Svolder (in999/1000, the winning Olav united Norway and Christianity spread there). The design was actually prepared as proposal for the county of South Trondelag in 1929/1930, but it was never adopted, so it was "reused" by Melhus.
As further explained by [c2j87] the (Norwegian) heraldry should not represent individual persons, but only general human figures and therefore it is blazoned so. However, for the Melhus inhabitants it is clear whom it is representing.
