I have a feeling I have seen such a flag (white background, the logo just above the centre, with "New Zealand Railways" written underneath) used during the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Not sure exactly when it came into existence (I'd guess about 1973).

I think that the New Zealand Railways flag was as pictured, except that the logo was larger, with no text. The version depicted was the Corporate flag: the version flown on NZR ships had the red replaced with green.

Michael Mellor is right - later versions of the flag didn't have the writing and were sloped towards the fly.

Shipping flag

The version of the corporate flag flown on NZR ships had the red replaced with green. Later versions of the logo were 'streamlined' with it leaning towards the right, then 'softened' with the corners rounded and the colours changed to blue and yellow rather than red/green and black.

This flag should be compared with the flag used on land. The logo is clearly based on the same basic idea, though in this case curved to represent waves. The version used with rounded corners and in blue and yellow was only used for the inter-island ferries plying Cook Strait - not for NZR as a whole.

Tranz Rail

New Zealand Rail was corporatised in 1991, privatised in 1993, and re-named Tranz Rail (not TraNZrail) in 1995.

New Zealand Railways is no more, having been �corporatised� as Tranzrail. Not sure exactly when that change took place, but I'd guess sometime around 1995.

It has a flag too; I've seen it flying. I can�t remember it exactly, but it's based on the design at their website (http://www.tranzrail.co.nz), both the logo and the background. I can�t remember whether it had any text on it or not.

TranzRail has been replaced by the government-owned NZ Railways Corpn trading as 'Ontrack' which looks after the infra-structure. The operations have been licensed out for 70 years to Toll NX Ltd - a subsidiary of an Australian company.
