Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent and Azure, issuant from base a throughout bridge Argent masoned Sable, having three arches, above a crozier Or in pale, superimposed by an open book Argent bound Gules and flanked by two scallops Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "AMARANTE - S. GONÇALO".

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of blue and yellow.

The arms are Or a vase with lid Purpure garnished Sable, in chief two heraldic fountains. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "MADALENA - AMARANTE".
Meaning:
The Commune being equivalent to a Catholic parish named for and patroned by Saint Mary Magdalen, the box in the arms is probably meant to be canting, showing the myrrh / ointment container / box / vase which is attribute of this saint.

Presentation of Madalena
Madalena Commune wass one of the pre-2013 communes of Amarante Municipality, being one of the urban communes of the municipality seat; formely known as Gestaçô, a town and seat of a municipality from 1514 to the beginning of the 19th century. It had 1956 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 1.6 km².

Shield Argent, an embattled tower Sable masoned Or with port and windows Or, surrounded by three oak leaves Vert and in chief a fleur-de-lis Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "CEPELOS - AMARANTE".

Meaning:
The tower is symbolising the architectural heritage of the commune. The leaves are symbolising the floral park of Cepelos. The fleur-de-lis is an attribute of Our Lady of Assumption, the local patron saint.
