About the flag
It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a white and purple gyronny background. Arms with mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE GOUVEIA". This is the flag in use since after the upgrading of the municipality seat to city status, in 1988.02.01.

The arms are Sable three watermill wheels Purpure in fess on a fess Argent charged with a fess Azure and in chief a five-pointed estoile upright Argent between two bunches of grapes leaved Vert and fruited Purpure.

The main element of the arms stand for the local early river-powered loom industry and the star stands for the mountain range Serra da Estrela(Star Range), a feature common to several local arms in this region; grapes symbolize local vineyards.

Before the upgrading of the municipality seat to city status, in 1988.02.01, the mural crown had only four towers (town rank) and the scroll read simply "GOUVEIA". This flag and arms was adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : I Série in 1985.02.21 (a remarkably late date).
