Meaning:
The coin is one of those of Carteia from 500 BC, issued by Carthaginians and Romans. The coin is also symbolizing the old age of the city. The green and white waves are symbolizing a location on the shores of the ocean. The dolphins are symbolizing the calm sea and the dolphin fishery in the past, done by tridents. Dolphins had been preserved in barrels with salt and had been important victuals of the ancient seafarers. The anchor is symbolizing seafaring and tourism. The canes are symbolizing the large sugar cane plantations, the first in Europe, which had been implemented by King D. Joo I. The ermine shield is reminding on the Lords of Barretos, local rulers in the past. The silver tower is representing the local fortification, defending the coast, the old fort, the new fort and the watch tower, all located between Gil Eanes Street and Gonçalo Velho Street.
