It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

Coat of Arms

Shield Vert chaussé Or charged with a stone-age painting Sable of a bovine, surrounded by a wreath of holly Vert fruited Gules, base wavy Argent a bar wavy Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and short white scroll, in Bénard Guedes style, reading in black upper case serifed letters "VALE DO CÔA".
Meaning:
The bovine head refers to the local open-air Paleolithic archaeological site in the Côa Valley. The site includes thousands of engraved rock drawings of horses, bovines and other animals, human and abstract figures, dated from 22,000 to 10,000 BC, see English WIKIPEDIA. The base wavy is a representation of the name giving Côa River, a tributary of the Douro River.

Presentation of Vale do Côa

Vale do Côa is one of the eight communes of Pinhel Municipality created by a merger during the 2013 changes. It had 172 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 52,2 km².

Coat of Arms

Shield Or; a bend sinister Azure, charged with a bendlet sinister Argent; in dexter chief a cross patty Gules, charged with a Greek cross Argent, in sinister base a branch of holly Vert fruited Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll (Bénard Guedes style) with inscription in black capitals "AZEVO". Meaning: The bend sinister wavy is representing the Côa River. The holly (Port.: azevinho) is a canting element. The cross is alluding to the Knights of the Order of Christ.

A different coat of arms is displayed here, however it contradicts the law, having a golden mural crown with 4 visible towers signifying town rank, which is hard to believe, as the former commune had had just 40 inhabitants.
