About the flag

It is a fairily typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a red and black gyronny (city rank) background. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : III Série in 1993.11.25. These arms and flag were adopted upon the upgrade of the municipality seat to city status in 1988.02.01 and are a trivial change of the former arms and flag.

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

The former arms and flag were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1935.03.01. These included the usual town attributes: four visible crown towers, "vila" in the scroll and red and black quarterly flag. Since the changes were trivial, the city flag was in use already in 1988-1993 — this is confirmed by my personal observation; gyronny plain flags replaced the quartered ones almost immediately, this surely due to manufactoring issues.

Berlengas islands

The municipal territory of Peniche includes the Berlengas island group (<2 km², larger island 0,78 km²) 15 km off shore;). See my flag proposals online (hereand here); while these pages show the whole thing in a tongue-in-cheek micro-nation style, two copies of the flagwere made and hoisted locally (in private, unofficial manner) once or thrice.

These do not have regular dwellers — apart from scientific and military personnel throughout the year, and many summertime visitors and municipal staff to assist those). Locally used/usable flags are:
