About the flag
It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a gyronny background (city rank) of red and yellow. This is the flag in use since after the upgrading of the municipality seat to city status, in 1988.02.01, dully confirmed (for there were no significant changes) by CHAAP in 1999.04.19.

Before the upgrading of the municipality seat to city status, in 1988.02.01, the mural crown had only four towers and the flag was quarterly (town rank). This flag and arms were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1935.04.08.
