Structure of Košice
Structure of Košice City, Slovakia. Its status is regulated by special law On Bratislava Capital City and City of Košice. In both cases is (if the 1998 local government systeme still unchanged is) is the City (and Capital City respective) the Self-governed structure, not Administrative Unit. The Administrative Units are "kraje" (Regions, sg.- kraj/Region - unofficial transation!) and okresy (Districts, sg. okres/District). The Administrative reform in Slovakia is still unfinished, since only structures of Self-government are Communities. "Kraje" are still without Organs of Self-government.
The City of Košice is divided into four Districts (Košice I.- IV.). The District Košice - okolie (Košice - surroundings) is a vicinity of the city, only its administration seat is in Košice.
Districts of Košice are further divided into "mestské časti" (sg. mestská časť/ward):
Okres Košice I. - Džungĺa ("Jungle"), Kavečany, Sever ("North"), Sídlisko Ťahanovce (Ťahanovce - Housing state), Staré mesto ("Old City"), Ťahanovce.
Okres Košice II. - Lorinčík, Luník IX, Myslav, Pereš,Poľov, Sídlisko KVP ("Košického vládneho programu/"Housing estate of the Košice Government Program), Šaca, Západ ("West").
Okres Košice III. - Dargovských hrdinov ("Ward of the Dargov Heroes"), Košická Nová Ves
Okres Košice IV. - Barca, Juh ("South"), Krásna, Nad Jazerom ("Over the Lake"),Šebastovce, Vyšné Opátske.
NB: The translation of Ward names is merely unofficial - that is: done by myself only to enjoy the "beauty" of these names. Housing estates in Post - socialist countries - this is in most cases a Labyrinth of concrete blocks of flats with such inspiring names like the mentioned "Sídlisko Košického vládneho programu". Košice was in Spring 1945, when Red Army liberated the eastern Slovakia and occupied forever Subcarpathian Ruthenia, provisional seat of Czechoslovak Government and President Beneš.
