Modra is c. 30 km north of Bratislava with 8.000 inhabitants. It was known since the 12th century, was given its first town privileges in the 14th century. Modra is a center of viticulture - hence the vine on the Coat of Arms. Here lived and died the organiser of the national revolution of 1848, Ludovit Stur.

The original symbol for Modra is the grape vine, which appears already on 14th century seals. In 1607 the present arms were granted by Rudolf II, who added the bars from the arms of Hungary to the arms.
