As a military unit, it is placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Armed Forces.

The flag of High Commander of the National Gendarmerie (Haut-Commandant de la gendarmerie nationale) is blue with national flag in the canton and with emblem of the Gendarmerie placed in the fly. Three white stars are placed over the emblem, representing the rank of High Commander as a three-star general.
