Description of the flag
A kind of pre-proposal of arms was featured on the plans of the Chamber of Commerce, whose cornerstone was set up in 1926, still visible on the pediment of the building. The design was used as a model for the insignia of the member of the Municipal Police. A contest was organized in 1955 to design a new coat of arms; the design eventually adopted was a compromise between different proposals. It features a lighthouse, square-sailed canoes. The shield is supported by branches of tamarind, a tree known in Wolof as "dhakar". The two chevrons symbolize the Mamelles (lit. the Teats), two volcanic hills of 95 m and 100 m, respectively. The westernmost - and highest - hill is surmounted by the Mamelles lighthouse, erected in 1863.
