Kalmyk Autonomous Province was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.
Stuart Notholt, 17 Sep 1995
In 1957 they were allowed to return and the area was reestablished as an autonomous oblast’. It regained ASSR status in 1958.
Chris Kretowicz, 06 Jun 2001
In 1957 or 1958 the republic was restablished and flag in Russian pattern was adopted. A source says that it was adopted in 1954, but that is probably is uncorrect. Mark Sensen gives the following dates: Abolished: 27-12-43, Restablished: 2-7-58
Jaume Ollé, 25 Nov 1996
In 1957 Kalmyk ASSR was restored (along with Chechen-Ingush ASSR, Kabardino-Balkar ASSR and Karachai AR). Flags attributed to these entities between 1944 and 1957 are, certainly, due to an error.
