The Migrations Central Office (Ofic�na Central de Migraci�n) was established by the Law on Migration in El Salvador, promulgated on 21 June 1933, and subsequently renamed to Directorate General of Migration (Direcci�n General de Migraci�n). A formal register of recorded terrestrial migrations was initiated in 1938.
The first Law on Foreigners was promulgated on 1 October 1986. The DGME was established in April 2002 as the merger of the Directorate General of Migration and of the Department of Foreigners (Departamento de Extranjer�a).
The flag of the DGME is white with the directorate's logo.
