The Ministry of Trade was formed in 2018 as the merger of the former Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Customs and Trade.

The Small and Medium Sized Industry Development Organization (Küçük ve Orta Ölçekli İşletmeleri Geliştirme ve Destekleme İdaresi Başkanlığı - KOSGEB) was established in April 1989, succeeding the Small Sized Industrial Enterprises Development Center (Küçük Sanayi Geliştirme Projesi - KÜSGEM). Originally established as a pilot project in the region of Gaziantep, KÜSGEM was transformed in 1983 into the Small and Medium-Sized Industrial Enterprises Development Center, operating at the national scale, by Resolution No. 6,744.
