The municipality of Beypazarı (48,732 inhabitants in 2020; 181,436 ha) is located 100 km north-west of Ankara.

Beypazarı, known in the antiquity as Lagania, was renamed to Lagania-Anastasiopolis after the visit of Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I Dicorus (491-518) to the local bishop.
Under the Seljuk rule, Beypazarı was settled by Turkmen tribes, especially the Kayı. Gazi G�nd�zalp, the grandfather of Osman Bey, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, was buried in the village of Hırkatepe, part of Beypazarı. At the time, the town was a main trade center located on the road connecting Istanbul to Baghdad.

The municipality launched a call for ideas open to local NGOs, students at Ankara University and at local high schools. More than 200 proposals were submitted, first short-listed to 40 and then to 3, among which the final design was selected.
