Sakaryaspor (Sakaryaspor Kulübü) was established on 17 June 1965, as the merger of İdmanyurdu, Güneşspor, Ada Gençlik and Gençlerbirliği.
The club played in the top league for the seasons 1981-1986, 1987-1990, 1998-1999, 2004-2005 and 2006-2007. Sakaryaspor finished 5th in 1981-1982 and 6th in 1983-1984 and 1984-1985. The club won the Turkish Cup in 1988 (2-0; 1-1, to Samsunspor), qualifying for the UEFA European Cup Winners' Cup (1st round: 2-0; 0-1, to Békéscsabai Elöre; 2nd round, 1-3; 0-3 to Eintracht Frankfurt).
The flag of Sakaryaspor (photo) is green with the club's emblem in the middle, and, beneath it, the writing "SAKARYASPOR" either in black or white letters. On the stand-alone emblem, used on a white background, "SAKARYA" is written in green and "SPOR" in black, matching the colours of the two "S" forming the emblem.
The quadrangular frame is a tribute to the club's supporters coming from all over Turkey.

The club formerly used a more traditional emblem (photo, photo), featuring the bridge also shown on the municipal emblem of Sakarya. The writing used on the emblem differred between the stand-alone emblem (SAKARYASPOR) and the flag (SAKARYASPOR A. Ş.). A.Ş. means "Anonim Şirketi", that is, "Simple Commandite Company".
The club's supporters bitterly criticized the club's president, İsmail Gürses, for the change of the emblem.
