Flag of Zile
The flag of Zile (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem. The former flag of Zile (photo) was white with the municipality's emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem of the municipality features Zile castle (photo).
Zile castle is the place where Roman Emperor Julius Caesar spoke his famous words veni, vidi, vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) to notify the Roman Senate about his bloody victory against King Pharnaces of Pontus. However, the famous castle is now facing erosion and destruction. Stones are rolling off the castle walls down towards houses built on the mountainside, making residents around the castle nervous.
[Daily Sabah, 22 July 2015]
Thereupon Caesar went thither straight with three legions, and fought a great battle with king Pharnaces by the city of Zela, where he slew his army, and drave him out of all the realm of Pont. And because he would advertise one of his friends of the suddenness of this victory,. he only wrote three words unto Anitius at Rome: ""Veni, vidi, vici:" I came, I saw, I overcame." These three words, ending all with like sound and letter in the Latin, have a certain short grace more pleasant to the ear than can be well expressed in any other tongue.
[Plutarch. The Life of Julius Caesar, 35]
Amongst the pageantry of the Pontic triumph, a tablet with this inscription was carried before him: I CAME, I SAW, I CONQUERED; not signifying, as other mottos on the like occasion, what was done, so much as the dispatch with which it was done.
[Suetonius. The Life of the Twelve Caesars, Julius, 37]
