Bayburt Province (90,154 inhabitants in 2010; 365,200 ha) was established by Law No. 3,578 enacted on 21 June 1989, separating from Gümüşhane, to which it had been transferred in 1927 from Erzurum Province.

The flag of Bayburt Province (photo) is white with the provincial emblem, which features the Bayburt citadel and Clock Tower. "Valiliği" means "Governorate".
