Presentation of Ardahan

The municipality of Ardahan (41,770 inhabitants in 2012, 19,075 in the town proper; 11,914 ha) is located in north-eastern Anatolia, on the border with Georgia.

Flag of Ardahan

The flag of Ardahan (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".

The emblem of the municipality features the gate of the Ardahan fortress (photo). Described as "inaccessible" by the traveller Evliya Chelebi in the 17th century, the Ottoman fortress of Ardahan was seized on 8 May 1877 by the Russian Army.
The bee surmounting the fortress represents the Ardahan honey, celebrated in a yearly festival held in the town. Eastern Anatolia, as well as neighbouring Georgia and Armenia, is the diversification center of the Caucasian honey bee (Apis mellifera caucasia Pollmann, 1889; presentation), a subspecies of the European honey bee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758).

The former flag of Ardahan (photo, photo) was white with the municipality's former emblem in the middle. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
Flags with the background either blue (photo) or yellow (photo) were also used.

Ardahan University (Ardahan Üniversitesi - ARÜ) was established on 22 May 2008.
The flag of ARÜ (photo, photo) is white with the university's emblem. The flag is also used with the university's colors as its background (photo,photo,photo): blue, orange or horizontally divided orange-blue.

The former flag of the Ardahan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (photo) is white with the organization's emblem.
The emblem is a quite faithful rendition of the fortress of Ardahan and the steel bridge erected over river Kura in the beginning of the 20th century (photo).
