Presentation of Alo

The chiefdom of Alo encompasses the eastern two thirds of Futuna Island - 53 km² (20 sq mi) out of 83 km² (32 sq mi) - and all of Alofi Island (32 km² - 12 sq mi) (which is virtually uninhabited). Alofi Island lies 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) to the southeast of Futuna Island. The total area of the chiefdom is 85 km² (33 sq mi). It comprises nine villages, the capital and largest village of Alo is Ono.

Description

According to Lucien Philippe 1999, the Royal standard of Alo represents a palm, upon which are crossed a club and an axe, the weapons who killed Father Chanel.

According to the book L'Eglise catholique à Wallis-et-Futuna (1837-2004), by Georges Delbos, CEPAC ed. 2004, 328 p. [online copy], p. 324 Annex #6, the flags of Alo and Sigave date from 1988:
"According to a Note from the Territorial Service of Cultural Affairs dated February 27, 2001 - .
Flag of Alo:
Red background: the blood of the martyr Pierre Chanel.
Weapons: machete and axe, instruments of martyrdom.
Yellow: the Catholic religion, symbol of peace.
Green (coconut) palm: Royalty or the power held by the Tui Agaifo.
Tricolor canton: affiliation to the French Republic."
