The Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, situated a mile and a half west from the centre of the town, and between Hylton and Chester Roads, was opened in 1856, the old cemetery in Thornton Place being then closed. The old cemetery was given by the Rev. Dr. Wellesley, the then rector, in 1839. The present cemetery originally comprised 34 acres, purchased from the Dean and Chapter at £275 per acre ; in 1888 there were 18½ acres added. The grounds are well laid out, and ornamented with trees and shrubs. There are two mortuary chapels in the Early English syle, built of brick with stone facings.
