In Memoriam

| | | Individal page | | | | Bailey, William, 06 Jul 1894, 6 p.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 64, Horse Fettler, Drowned in sump at bottom of shaft | | ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | | | Individal page | | | | Ball, J., 17 Apr 1874, aged 48, Blacksmith, Spark exploded quarter cask of powder in the shop | | | | Individal page | | | | Berrisford, Thomas, 30 Mar 1906, 12.30 p.m., aged 57, Collier, Deceased was cutting up in the top coal, 4 feet thick, in order to drop the coal in a "waste." About two tons of coal suddenly fell from two slips at right angles to each other and previously unseen, and killed him instantly | | | | Individal page | | | | Bettany, Thomas, 29 Aug 1913, aged 63, Fireman, The accident happened on a main rope engine dip. While a set of four tubs was being pushed into the dip to be lowered, one of the couplings became detached, and three of the tubs ran away and became derailed 14 yards down the incline, leaving the single tub attached to the rope. While deceased was assisting a roadman to push the tub down and it was about to be recoupled to the runaway tubs, the engine was reversed and the tub drawn back, and as deceased attempted to enter a manhole he was crushed by the tub against a post. He died on the same day. No signal had been given. It had been customary for the engine driver to accept the tightening of the rope on the drum as the signal to lower, and whenever the tubs ceased to pull away the slack rope it was usual to reverse the engine and wind up the rope until it became taut. On this occasion, owing to only one empty tub being attached, the driver did not feel the tension until the accident happened. Strict instructions have been given that the engine is not to be worked except in accordance with signals in future | | | | Individal page | | | | Brassington, William, 19 Jun 1900, 8 a.m., aged 21, Taker-off, Crushed by tub in a short jig dip. He had called up the dip for some one to come down and help him in his work, and then he started to go up the dip. A collier at the top thought the shout was to jig a tub, and he turned a tub into the dip, which ran down loose and caught Brassington. He had only worked under-ground about 2 months | | | | Individal page | | | | Chatterton, J., 12 Jul 1867, aged 21, Collier | | | | Individal page | | | | Cotton, James, 23 Sep 1870, aged 56, Collier, Fall of roof | | | | Individal page | | | | Davis, Joshua, 30 Jul 1909, aged 26, Driver, Deceased was standing near the hind quarters of his pony while it was turning round in a shunt to get into position to take out a journey of loads. An S-shaped link which attached the side chains of the pony's gears to the stem somehow became entangled in the buckle of a belt which deceased was wearing. The pony was startled and set off along the level dragging the deceased a distance of 90 yards before it was stopped, causing a compound fracture of deceased's skull | | | | Individal page | | | | Dunn, W., 28 Jun 1867, aged 40, Sinker, Bowk fell from surface on the sinkers [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Edwards, Charles, 08 Sep 1896, 2.15 a.m., aged 31, Fireman, Fall of roof in level in Hard mine while he was pulling roof down | | | | Individal page | | | | Edwards, T., 06 Aug 1886, aged 56, Contractor, Suffocated by firedamp | | | | Individal page | | | | Fernihough, J., 27 Jan 1874, aged 59, Engineer, By machinery moving during repairs | | | | Individal page | | | | Gould, J., 25 Mar 1868, Collier, Fall of coal | | | | Individal page | | | | Hallam, G. H., 12 Feb 1900, 5 a.m., aged 46, Collier, Fall of top coal from roof of main dip at working face. The roof coal was unsound, and was timbered to within 10 ft. of the face of dip. Two more bars should have been put in, but reliance was placed on an apparent improvement in the strength of the top coal. The top coal fell suddenly over the whole area between the face and the timber, 10 ft. by 7 ft. by 2½ ft. thick. Another man was injured | | | | Individal page | | | | Hulme, William, 17 Jul 1860, aged 40, Miner, A rail fell down the shaft, caught about 30 yards from the bottom, and upset the tub with deceased [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Hurst, Jesse, 17 Jul 1860, aged 45, A rail fell down the shaft, caught about 30 yards from the bottom, and upset the tub with deceased [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Hurst, R., 15 Jan 1862, aged 18, Banksman, Fell down winding pit | | | | Individal page | | | | Johnson, John, 08 Jun 1876, aged 28, Collier, Fall of roof in drift | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, J., 10 May 1860, aged 14, Boy, Explosion of firedamp | | | | Individal page | | | | Leese, J., 25 May 1859, aged 25, Collier, Fall of roof | | | | Individal page | | | | Merry, Peter, 05 Nov 1868, aged 23, Collier, Fall of coal | | | | Individal page | | | | Palin, S., 28 Feb 1858, aged 44, Miner, Fall of coal | | | | Individal page | | | | Pickstock, James, 20 Dec 1909, (accident: 14 Dec 1909), aged 58, Blacksmith, Deceased was struck on the elbow by a small piece of iron which caused very slight injury. Septic poisoning however rapidly supervened and he died six days later | | | | Individal page | | | | Rhodes, S., 21 Feb 1868, aged 33, Loader, Fall of roof | | | | Individal page | | | | Ross, J., 13 Mar 1860, aged 24, Collier, Fall of roof | | | | Individal page | | | | Salmon, Daniel, 17 Jul 1860, aged 35, A rail fell down the shaft, caught about 30 yards from the bottom, and upset the tub with deceased [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Sherratt, William, 30 Jun 1900, (accident: 09 Nov 1899, 9.15 p.m.), aged 57, Collier, Injured by a fall of coal from the working face in Bowling Alley Seam while preparing to set a sprag. Died 30th May, 1900 | | | | Individal page | | | | Stannier, W., 02 Dec 1865, aged 23, Collier, Explosion of powder | | | | Individal page | | | | Taylor, William, 17 Jul 1860, aged 14, A rail fell down the shaft, caught about 30 yards from the bottom, and upset the tub with deceased [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Tigley, Charles, 02 Jun 1908, aged 26, Banksman, Deceased was crushed between the buffers of an empty and a loaded railway wagon. In order to start the loaded wagon moving from under the screen he got between the buffers and pushed on the empty with his back against the buffer of the loaded wagon. Whilst he was doing so a shunter allowed another empty to come down the siding and to bunt into the top end of four standing next the one deceased was pushing on. Before bringing the empty down the siding, which was inclined at 1 in 60, the shunter had seen that no one was about the wagons. There is a slight curve at the spot, and deceased and the shunter could not see each other until the empty almost reached its destination. Since the occurrence an electric alarm bell has been put up and it is switched on to ring and to continue ringing all the time that wagons are moving on the siding | | | | Individal page | | | | Tomlinson, George, 13 Jun 1901, aged 45, Collier, Fall of roof coal on a road 4½ ft. wide in Cockshead seam, when a "goth" occurred as he and another man were going to work. The fall was 7 yds. long by 18 ins. thick. The roof coal had been taken down on both sides of the fall and the roof barred. The other man was slightly injured | | | | Individal page | | | | Whiston, Thomas, 16 Dec 1890, aged 21, Dip runner, Crushed by tub while lowering them over the top of an engine dip. He had forgotten to couple the tubs and was improperly in front of them in the dip | | | | Individal page | | | | Whitehead, Joseph, 10 Apr 1913, aged 36, Collier Chargeman, A load had come off in a jig (inclination 1 in 2.8) owing to the jig chain breaking. A locker was put in each pair of wheels and the load replaced on the rails. An unsuccessful attempt to push the lockered load down the jig was made, and the deceased went in front, and assisted by three others, pushed back the tub and removed the lockers. The load overpowered him and the others who were holding back, and he was forced to the bottom of the jig, a distance of 8 yards in front of the load. He was injured internally and died on the following day. The accident was the result of extreme rashness and foolhardiness, and direct contravention of Special Rule 103 | | | | Individal page | | | | Wooley, Enoch, 17 Jul 1860, aged 18, A rail fell down the shaft, caught about 30 yards from the bottom, and upset the tub with deceased [More information ...] | | | | | | | | | | 34 names found | | | | | |
